A matched case-control study aimed to identify risk factors for generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) development, utilizing data from the IBM Explorys electronic health record database. The study found that obesity, history of tobacco smoking, depression, anxiety disorder, and recent systemic corticosteroid exposure were associated with increased odds of GPP diagnosis. Conversely, alcohol use disorder was linked to lower odds of GPP development, and Black patients had decreased odds compared to White patients.
These results provide insight into potential proximal influences on pustular disease, despite some limitations, such as potential misclassification of cases. The study highlights the importance of identifying lifestyle factors and psychiatric comorbidities in assessing GPP risk. Understanding these risk factors could aid in early detection and intervention strategies for individuals predisposed to GPP, contributing to improved management of this rare condition.
