TikTok, with more than two billion downloads since 2016, has rapidly grown into one of the most popular social media platforms worldwide. Psoriasis is one of the most viewed dermatologic diseases on TikTok, but limited data exists regarding the content related to psoriasis treatment on the platform. This study aims to evaluate viewer engagement, content quality, and viewer experience of TikTok videos on psoriasis treatment, comparing the content created by physicians and non-physicians.
The study analyzed the top 120 TikTok videos related to psoriasis treatment, which met specific inclusion criteria such as being in English, containing text or audio, and uploaded between March 28, 2020, and March 30, 2022. Engagement was measured through a ratio of likes and comments to views, while content quality was evaluated using the DISCERN instrument and viewer experience through the Armstrong Viewer Assessment (AVA). The analysis revealed that 61.7% of videos were created by non-physicians, 21.7% by physicians, and 16.7% by private skincare companies. Dermatologists are encouraged to use trending features on the platform to engage a broader audience and promote open dialogue with users about psoriasis treatment.
