Review Highlights Role of Genetics and Environment in Psoriasis Development, Paving Way for Targeted Treatments

A review looked at genetic factors and environmental triggers in the development of psoriasis. Studies indicate that psoriasis may be more likely to occur in individuals with a family history of the disease, and genetic mutations have been linked to its development. However, without environmental triggers, such as infections, stress, or certain medications, the condition may not manifest, even in individuals with genetic predispositions.

More than 80 genes are associated with psoriasis, but only about 2-3% of the population develops the condition, highlighting the importance of both genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. Triggers for psoriasis include infections, medication, smoking, obesity, stress, and alcohol. Genetic research has identified various genes that play a role in the immune system’s inflammatory response in psoriasis, such as HLA-Cw6 and CARD14, and genes impacting cytokines like IL-23. These discoveries are crucial in developing new treatments, like biologics targeting specific immune pathways, offering hope for more effective management of psoriasis.
