Study Reveals Key Factors That Influence Adherence to Topical Psoriasis Treatments

Researchers of a study identified several factors associated with better adherence to topical psoriasis treatments, including higher education, living in a single-family household, active employment, a family history of psoriasis, and the presence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Researchers analyzed data from 102 patients with psoriasis in Portugal, using self-reported questionnaires and medical logs to assess adherence. The findings suggest that sociodemographic factors play a significant role in treatment adherence, with those having lower education levels, living in multi-family households, or being unemployed showing significantly lower odds of adhering to treatment.

The study also explored the reasons behind these associations. For example, individuals living alone may have more time to apply topical treatments regularly, while those with active employment might prioritize their appearance and thus be more diligent with their treatment. Additionally, patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms may adhere better due to their desire for control and perfection. The researchers emphasized the need for multidisciplinary approaches to improve treatment adherence, particularly focusing on health literacy interventions.
